The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) was established in 1967 in response to the political and social upheaval of the 1960s. Surveying this political and social landscape, Charles Edison, former governor of New Jersey, secretary of the Navy and son of the inventor Thomas Alva Edison, recognized that college students needed a balanced perspective on political and economic institutions. And in 1967, he took the first steps toward establishing the The Fund for American Studies.
The NAF has partnered with TFAS for more than a decade to provide experiential education opportunities to Dutch and Dutch Caribbean university students in Washington, D.C through a guaranteed internship, classes, guest lectures, networking events, a mentor program, and site briefings. There are four tracks for this program:
- International Affairs: Internships in Congressional offices, embassies, think tanks and international non-governmental organizations.
- Public Policy + Economics: Internships in federal agencies, think tanks, policy groups, law firms, Congressional offices and non-governmental organizations.
- Journalism + Communications: Internships in newspapers, magazines, news services, radio, public relations firms and Capitol Hill press offices.
- Business + Government Relations: Internships in government affairs offices of large corporations, industry trade associations and lobbying firms.
The NAF, in collaboration with TFAS’ D.C. Academic Internship Program, provides full scholarships each summer to citizens of the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean Islands. The scholarship covers tuition, housing, health insurance and the costs associated with applying for a visa. Scholarship awardees are responsible for funding their travel to the U.S. and living expenses while in the U.S.
