Founded in 1928 and based in Leiden, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave is the national museum for the history of science and medicine. Through its world-renowned collection of scientific and medical instruments spanning five centuries, the museum tells the stories of groundbreaking Dutch discoveries and their impact on our lives today. The museum presents science with a human face, sparking curiosity as well as engaging a wide public in debates on pressing scientific and ethical issues of our time. We do this by offering various educational programmes, (temporary) exhibitions, activities and events, both inside and outside the museum. Rijksmuseum Boerhaave was elected European Museum of the Year 2019. Founded in 1977, this is the oldest and most prestigious museum award in Europe. The international jury praised the museum: “The exceptional public quality of this museum results from its artful approach to communicating science. Important and beautiful objects are interpreted using the latest technologies and the personal stories of those driven by a passion for the pursuit of knowledge.”
Are collections hosts several rare microscopes of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the first pendulum clock by Christiaan Huygens, the oldest heliocentric planetarium in the world, anatomical preparations and objects relating to Dutch Nobel Prize laureates. The museum offers young and old a peek into the fascinating world of science, showcasing what science is all about: curiosity, courage, creativity, and perseverance.
At the moment Rijksmuseum Boerhaave is giving shape to ambitious expansion plans, creating a life science and health hub. This Life Science & Health Pavilion will be a place where visitors can become fascinated by biotechnology and gain an understanding of the world of life sciences and innovative medicine. In a society where scientific and technological developments are accelerating, we see it as our mission to involve people in these developments and show them where they come from. As this will lead to a greater understanding of science and the importance of research and innovation.
Your donation will contribute directly to the development of the Life Science & Health Pavilion, making sure that we can strengthen our social and scientific relevance. We would be thrilled to welcome you in our American Friends circle. Please don’t hesitate to contact us in case you have any questions.
