Naturalis Biodiversity Center has over 42 million plants, animals and minerals. This makes it one of the largest and geographically most broad natural history collections in the world. With this collection – that is largely digitized and globally accessible – Naturalis studies biodiversity in all its facets to understand biodiversity and maintain biodiversity around the globe. In light of the current biodiversity crisis, this work is more relevant than ever! Internationally, Naturalis is taking the lead in terms of digital access to natural history collections, leading a powerful European biodiversity-data network and working hard to connect biodiversity research from all over the world. At Naturalis, everything revolves around understanding biodiversity, maintaining biodiversity and developing strategies for a livable planet .
Research
Naturalis is an authority in the field of biodiversity research. Naturalis passes on its knowledge and expertise to tomorrow’s researchers by teaching at different universities in The Netherlands and doing joint research projects with research institutions all over the world.
Education
More than 60.000 students from schools of primary and secondary education come to Naturalis every year to learn about the wonders of nature.
Museum
Naturalis has opened a new and beautiful family museum in 2019. Enjoy nature from the most remote habitats. Go back in time to the Ice-age, of even further to the time of dinosaurs, and meet Trix, the most beautifully preserved Tyrannosaurus rex in the world.
